Your work has a distinctive style that blends nostalgia with modern elements. Can you tell us more about what inspires you and how you approach your creative process?
I am nostalgic for a time I never knew, and from a young age I've been inspired by the bold graphics and craftsmanship of mid-century America — vintage signage, old advertisements, and iconic cultural symbols that really left a mark on me. These elements are more than just images or words; they evoke memories and emotions that I want to capture in my work. My creative process begins by immersing myself in these nostalgic visuals. I pour over magazines and design books from the 1950's, gathering images and phrases that speak to the theme or concept I’m developing. From there, I sketch out ideas and experiment with different compositions until I find something that resonates. The process is quite fluid, and I’m always open to letting the materials and techniques guide the final outcome.
Balancing commercial success with artistic integrity can be challenging for many artists. How do you navigate this, and how has your work evolved over time?
That balance is one of the most challenging aspects of being an artist. On one hand, you want your work to be appreciated and to reach a wide audience; on the other, it’s important not to compromise who you are. For me, it’s about finding that sweet spot where my work resonates with others but still feels authentic to who I am and what I want to express. Over the years, my work has evolved dramatically. It took me some time to experiment with different tools and techniques to find my style, and it took more time to find my artistic voice. As I’ve grown, my work has become more refined, but I still try to maintain a sense of playfulness and openness to new ideas. I think evolution is a natural part of any creative journey—it's about continually pushing yourself to explore new directions while staying grounded in your core vision.
Looking forward, what new directions or themes are you excited to explore in your work?
I’m really excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. For a long time I've wanted to go further with the use of text in my work and give the words greater prominence. I like the idea of elevating text and language, and I want to explore how I can incorporate these textual elements while still maintaining the nostalgic essence that defines my work. I’m also interested in how different materials can interact to create new textures and visual effects. I'm always excited for new opportunities that push me out of my comfort zone. I find it both challenging and exhilarating. Growth happens when you take risks, and I’m eager to see where these new explorations will take me.
As an artist, what philosophy or approach guides your work?
I always say that we were created to be creative. I think that art is a reflection of the artist’s experiences, emotions, and worldview. When I create, I’m not just making something visually appealing; I’m trying to convey a piece of myself and my perspective on the world. That includes design, composition, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. But it also includes the themes and ideas that I think are worth discussing. I hope that my work resonates with people and stir their own memories and experiences. I also believe in the power of art to connect people—to evoke a shared sense of nostalgia or to spark conversations about the themes I explore. Ultimately, I want my art to be a visual expression of who I am, what I'm learning, and what I find beauty in. When that expression resonates with others and they find value in it I take it as a great compliment.
