What initially inspired you to start working with metal mesh as your primary medium, and how has your approach to it evolved over time?

I was taking a summer architecture exploration class at Harvard the summer of 1992 and started using aluminum insect screen when creating models.  I was drawn to its ease of manipulation and the tactile memories that it induced - childhood summers with my grandmother - going in and out of her screen door.

Your sculptures often seem to balance between structure and fluidity. What emotions or messages are you hoping to convey through this interplay in your work?

My art is a fusion of fun, happy memories and things that I find beautiful.  I hope that playful, good energy is the result.

Can you share a specific piece that holds significant emotional value to you? What was the inspiration behind it, and what do you hope viewers take away from it?

"Cotton Candy Cumulus - Grape" is a sculpture that speaks to fun times in childhood: going to the county fair, creating costumes for family plays and drinking grape Koolaid.  Life can be so dark and serious - I try to balance that with experiences and touch stones for the light hearted and joyful.

Nature seems to be a recurring theme in your work. How does your environment influence your creative process and the emotions you aim to evoke through your sculptures?

I grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, surrounded by amazing natural beauty.  "Fine art" was not something I was exposed to - so I suppose I was inspired to relate to the beauty found in clouds and flowers and lichens.

Many of your pieces have a sense of movement and life. How do you go about infusing your work with this dynamic energy, and what do you hope it communicates to those who experience it?

For many years I didn't know if what I created was "art".  It wasn't oil painting or stone sculpture. I'm happy you think it is dynamic - my approach is serious play. Its meant to be fun.

Art has the power to connect with people on a deep emotional level. What emotions or reactions do you hope your audience feels when they encounter your sculptures?

I find art to have the power to be healing on an emotional level.  My studio is an immersive experience for me - a nurturing, fun, creative space.  I hope my work can be a touchstone for others with their happy memories.

Atticus Adams’ sculptures capture the essence of joy, nostalgia, and nature, creating a deeply personal yet universally relatable experience for viewers. His ability to infuse light-hearted energy into structured forms not only showcases his unique talent but also reminds us of the healing and transformative power of art. Through his work, Adams continues to offer a playful, uplifting touchstone that resonates with our own cherished memories.
