Your work dives into themes of industrial nostalgia and futuristic fantasy. If you could live in any decade or future era, where would Electric Coffin call home?
The work is intentionally vague on time. We are consistently looking towards the future while being stewards of the past. We are balancing our nostalgia for our childhood full of innocence and joy with knowledge of the present world and where our future is headed. Humans are self directed and throughout history we have steered society and the world through a collective unconscious. We feel the themes we are exploring are relevant to humanity in the past, present, and future.
The name “Electric Coffin” is impossible to ignore! What does it mean to you, and what vibe are you aiming to spark with a name like that?
The name is derived from the idea of giving energy to the mundane. We are surrounded by art, our whole existence is a beautiful experience. Our practice is dedicated to exploring and finding subtext and meaning in objects and iconography and bringing that meaning to light in our art. The typography in our work is all found typography from our day to day interactions in the world.
Your pieces are a blend of rebellion and refinement. What’s the wildest object or material you’ve ever incorporated, and how did it end up in your work?
Similar to the inspiration of our work, the materials are also typically standard materials. We do strive to use them in unique ways and balance texture and grit with all the details being tended to. A well made piece of art with considered details and high level of finish allows us to incorporate lots of contrasting elements. That being said, we do have a large palette of materials we explore, our work is narrative driven, so the medium changes based on what the story the artwork is telling.
When you’re creating, what’s the feeling you want to leave people with -jaw-drop awe, pure curiosity, or something else entirely?
We love rewarding curiosity. I think the goal is always to create something we feel naturally compelled to from a distance. However, we dive deep into the details and want to make sure if people take time to explore the work, it rewards them by revealing many easter eggs.
If your art had its own soundtrack, what would we hear? Synth-heavy future beats, gritty rock, or maybe something completely unexpected?
It changes consistently. But if we have to describe it, it probably is some kind of mash up of 90s punk and jazz. It's responding and flowing and typcially doesn't have a plan. But it also is rooted in social commentary, our youth and occasionally angst.
Many of your works feel like bold statements about consumer culture and tech. If you could gift one piece to a famous CEO, who would it be and why?
We may or may not have some collectors who are famous CEOs. I think any of the Unio characters would be a great piece for a CEO to have. They are meant to represent the merging of technology and the natural world. They have subtext meaning as well and hopefully get people to think about our future, our society, where we should be heading. Anyone in a position to make change could potentially benefit from having a piece of art that gets them to think differently.
